A Successful Stairway Walks Day

Today was Stairway Walks Day, sponsored by statewide walkability nonprofit FeetFirst. It was the third annual "running" of the event, which this year featured 13 stairway walks from the book, in neighborhoods across the Seattle area. The walk we led was "Madrona and Leschi," Chapter 8 in the book. A somewhat discouraging weather forecast never materialized, and it turned out to be a perfect day for an urban hike!

Route Alert Update: Longfellow Creek

Two posts below, we reported that a car drove into Longfellow Creek in West Seattle, damaging an important creek crossing near the beginning of the "Longfellow Creek and Pigeon Point" stairway walk (Chapter 19). We gave a suggested workaround, but a detour might soon be unecessary. Work to repair the protective railing on the currently closed pedestrian bridge has begun. SDOT personnel onsite told us they expect the job to be finished by the start of next week (January 12)!
